I come from a mixed lineage of Argentinean, French, Lebanese and lived ¾ of my life in England. This multi-layered backdrop makes me what I call an “Alga”.
This concoction is mirrored in the genres of art I use in my art work as a choreographer and dancer.
I utilise the body on multiple layers to create a communication with other spatial architectures around it, the development of this concept gives the body more volume on stage. The dance genres used, combine influences of Raqs Sharqi (Arabic Dance tradition) Contemporary, physical theatre and Ballet, Butoh. This mixture creates a unique genre of dance that is both an honor and challenge to develop.
The second layer being used is synesthesia. Employing visuals, objects, sounds a etc to interact with the sensors of the body.
The third layer is the use of “interactive visual”; this is an immersive environment where the members of audience or the dancers can interact with the visuals randomly to change the visual and sound environment. This style can create accumulated dimensions therefore a Labyrinth of senses.
The Alga adjective mentioned earlier proposes the questions of research in my productions;
What is belonging? What are the modern myths? What is the new autogenesis sources of information? and What is the time and space that we occupy in different urban cities (urbanicities)?
My research and development happens in the context of the city I am visiting or living in.
In the U.K most of my work is inspired by the workshops I lead with the Refugees or the Disaffected minorities in communities.
In Germany, and Taiwan my work developed from secrets that the citizens of these countries shared with me.
Secret? Secrets? How can they inform a whole project? I collected hundreds of secrets In Taiwan based on cultural taboos, ethics, from socio-politico order, and stigmas. Out of these I created a performance for 40 performers during my residency the first time.
“Labyrinth of the Senses”, Is a promenade interactive performance full of energy and fun. Where the city energy moves inside the Taipei artist village’s premises.
People shuffle in the city that changes every second but still contain their own tempos, dreams, and secrets; in a very challenging urban life, they are still facing the world with positive attitude; in the conflict of old and new, west and east, conservative and creative,
Taipei people find their own harmony. These qualities and attitudes of the individual are being exposed and celebrated in this piece together with the unique Taipei atmosphere.
A close collaboration between myself and multimedia experts Hsin Chien Huang, from Storynest, and Jung Ting Lin from Blue Phoenix, has resulted in a new relationship between live performance and film. The site specific piece was flooded with multimedia projections of two subjects a virtual city which provide more than a backdrop to the dancers and the audience. The second imagery was based on a virtual, visual interactive dialogue between the audience and the dancer. Both of the multi media artists have created a computer generated graphics respond and react to their movement, in a true integration of technology, theatricality and raw physicality. Hence, the boundary between the audiences and performer no longer exist, every participant creates new history records in the performance.
The work that I have created within the Hualian, international workshop is looking at the study of space and Time, within the context of the other. Time takes another form and space takes another meaning, both of them lose their habitual references. Therefore within my physical performance ‘Little red riding Wolf’ my movements take on another angle and I bring in a choreography of machinery, the cars become some of the dancers, and the derelict building becomes a breathing element. Additionally to my performance I felt the need to change the way I look at the body hence my installation the ‘White House’. “Where the body gets dissected and change gravity!
How is the work presented?
The work is presented under three different art genres: performance, film, or installations. Which can be displayed together under the format of Dance installation or separately.
When the three art forms are combined together, the performance takes the form of a promenade. This combination gives the work an edge of a rare simulacrum. The environments offered are where the audiences have the freedom of choice
Future work:
I am at the moment directing artistically 21 youth groups in Barnet London. This is taking me to my next phase of work, entitled: Games.
